Ebook About A true, bestselling story from the battlefield that faithfully portrays the horror, the madness, and the trauma of the Vietnam War More than half a million copies of Chickenhawk have been sold since it was first published in 1983. Now with a new afterword by the author and photographs taken by him during the conflict, this straight-from-the-shoulder account tells the electrifying truth about the helicopter war in Vietnam. This is Robert Mason’s astounding personal story of men at war. A veteran of more than one thousand combat missions, Mason gives staggering descriptions that cut to the heart of the combat experience: the fear and belligerence, the quiet insights and raging madness, the lasting friendships and sudden death—the extreme emotions of a "chickenhawk" in constant danger."Very simply the best book so far about Vietnam." -St. Louis Post-DispatchBook Chickenhawk Review :
This is my 3rd book about flying helicopters in Vietnam. It's hard to differentiate among them considering the heroism displayed in their combat tours, and I am sure the same is true for all of the books written by helicopter pilots about that war. Mason's book reads like the raw unvarnished truth of a costly was that should never have happened. Most Vietnam veterans don't like to talk about the horrors and carnage they witnessed and the futility of retaking the same ground over and over. Mason doesn't mince words when he writes about the futility of the war, but don't diminish the courage of those brave men who fought valiantly whether they believed we should be there or not. We do (and did) them a grave injustice for faulting their participating in service of their country. He is on target with leadership's equating body count with winning. Over 50,000 names on The Wall prove that false, as does the vibrant emerging country Vietnam has become. Mason shows great courage in talking about the damage to his soul, life, marriage and mind in the aftermath. Untold numbers of men endured (and still endure) the emotional struggles of combat. The epilogue is valuable in providing "the rest of the story". The combat experience takes its toll over a lifetime. I highly recommend this book for an honest view of both the courage and emotional cost of flying helicopters in combat. Unless we have been there, there's no better way of beginning to understand what that experience is like. Mason's account almost touches your gut, an achievement in itself. Exceptional book. Not quite as good as “the ultimate Vietnam book” as promised when I bought it but great nonetheless. It captures the training, how he became a helicopter pilot, the mundane part of life and the drinking and whoring of most in Vietnam. But where it excels is describing the missions “set this bird down in the smallest spot possible under fire heavily loaded with troops or equipment and pick up the wounded for the return”. Did that sound like too much? It was. And that is where the book excels.Let me first say: this guy was a brilliant pilot and conveys that well in here! Small nuances about landings no one could make but he makes. The tumble down a mountain side to gain speed when he stalls. This guy should be dead at least 5 times.Little Time is spent on his return but just enough. He struggled, he excelled, he spends nights with PTSD, he tumbled in to marijuana smuggling and spent time in jail. All the while he unlocked this brilliant book he had inside him. He has a follow up, After ChickenHawk which I have bought to read also.I couldn’t recommend this book higher although there are slow spots. As a companion book from a North Vietnam perspective read “When Heaven and Earth Changed Places”.
